An overview of self-engineering systems

Failures in high value, safety-critical, inaccessible, and productivity-critical systems is an area of significant research interest. Despite advances predictive continuous maintenance services, there still a need for more ambitious approach to preserve system’s functions despite degradation damage. This paper presents the concept self-engineering (SE) system which utilises techniques such as self-healing, self-repairing, self-adapting self-reconfiguration enable respond autonomously loss or potential its function. Two types SE are outlined, with control without control. A taxonomy these key related concepts presented. review focuses primarily on physical systems, rather than software where well advanced. Technology within mechanical, civil, electrical electronics, mechatronics engineering disciplines repair robotics reviewed. Finally, gaps identified discussed.
